This very cute and balanced small mid century creation by Timo Sarpaneva is a more rare 9cm variant of item nr 3575 named Kyynel. Kyynel is the Finnish word for Tear.
This glass sculpture by Timo Sarpaneva has common features with some other mid century glass sculptures of his, like for instance the well known Orchid glass sculpture.
Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006), is one of Finland's most famous art glass designers. His pioneering glass work has received much recognition internationally and he has several times been awarded for his stunning art glass designs. He is the man who in 1954 got famous for having created "the most beautiful item in the world" according to House Beautiful -magazine. The magazine referred to the Orchid that was on show at the Triennale in Milan 1954.
The Tear was produced in two sizes. The larger one is far more common and measures around 14cm in height. The smaller size is around 9cm high, and is rarely seen for sale. The 9cm sized items often have a signature that does not contain the word IITTALA.
The overall impression of this delicate piece is very good. Them item has a thin faint soot line within the glass in the lower part of the sculpture. See close up view.
