Tapio Wirkkala designed in a wide range of different materials. He said that materials have their own rules that dictate the artistic process. He often made the prototype of his creation by himself. He said that his task as an artist was to free the inner potential of each material.
Nature obviously was a very important source of inspiration for Wirkkala. He spent a lot of time at his cottage in Lapland observing nature and water and ice through different times of the year.
The Feather vase (3122) is a typical example of a Wirkkalas creation that is inspired by nature. There are several creations by Wirkkala with variations of this same theme, but in the Feather vase the resemblance to an actual feather is particularly strong.
Mold-blown crystal, comb-cut back and smooth front surface (or vice versa depending on how you like to see it).
This vase is in a good vintage condition with no nicks or cracks, only minor signs of normal wear.
There are small light line reflections seen in the smooth part of the vase.
