This vase is a special "Savoy" vase from year 2002. It is a reproduction of the 1937 clear "Savoy" vase. The elegantly folding glass is a perfect example of Alvar Aalto's free flowing imagination.
This vase is blown in an old wooden mold previously used for the original Savoy vases, and hence the vase is 14 cm in height like the original vases were. Due to the undulating walls of the old wooden mold light is scattered in a magic way in this vase. The color is clear with a light turquoise tint.
The Aalto vase designed by famous architect Alvar Aalto is an icon of Finnish design. The first versions of it was presented 60 years ago in 1936 and these vases got much attention at the Paris World Fair in 1937. Since then the Aalto vases, in many different sizes and versions, have conquered the hearts of generations world wide.
The vases are still today mouth blown into a mold at the Iittala glass factory in Finland. But the molds are not usually wooden any more. The production of one vase goes through 12 work stages, and every single Aalto vase is hand made.
